Third Place in the Kingdom

UNISON Kinneil Band were delighted to gain a podium place at the Fife Charities Band Association (FCBA) Open Brass Band contest which was held on Saturday 30th September 2017 in the Adam Smith Theatre in Kirkcaldy.

This was the Kinneil Bands first contest working under the baton of our new resident conductor Chris Shanks and it proved to be a successful start to our partnership together. It was also a rather early start for the band as we were drawn number 4 from 17 bands but the early start proved fruitful as we were awarded 3rd place in the Open Competition. The playing programme consisted of the popular street march Ravenswood (William Rimmer), a beautiful hymn tune arrangement titled Prelude on ‘Lavenham’ (arr. Nobes) and the challenging test piece work of Philip Sparke’s Dances and Alleluias. Next up for the band is the eagerly awaited Annual Concert which is being held on Friday 17th November in Bo’ness Town Hall.

10th at the Scottish Open

Kinneil finished their last competitive engagement of the year with a solid 10th place finish at the Scottish Open Championship which was held in Perth on Saturday 29th November. The band, under the Musical Direction of Craig Anderson, was given a late invite to play in the Championship standard event.

Kinneil were drawn to play number 12 from a strong line up of 14 bands from across the UK. The band gave an accomplished reading of the extremely difficult test piece ‘Gallery’ from the pen of distinguished soloist, conductor, adjudicator and composer Howard Snell.

Kinneil were fortunate enough to call on some new found friends who reside in The Netherlands and play with Soli Brass from the Leeuwarden area of the country. Christiaan Broekema helped out on Eb Bass while Meindert De Koning and Martin Schruba gave a hand to our percussion team. Martin’s performance was so full of quality he walked away with the 4Barsrest Best Instrumentalist Award for his astounding musical interpretation on the Vibraphone! Overall the band secured a 10th place finish at the contest with Adjudicators Howard Snell and Alan Fernie placing the band 11th and Philip Sprake placing the band 6th in his opinion.

The band has learned a great deal from the experience at this contest and we have also managed to make some wonderful friends from The Netherlands in the process too! We hope they enjoyed the Scottish Open experience as much as we did! Next up for the band before we take a couple of weeks off between Christmas and New Year is our Christmas concerts being held on 3rd and 17th December.
